Aspen Dining

Come for the snow, stay for the food!

Mountain dining on and off piste

For the past five or so years, I’ve headed to the Aspen, Co. to take in some of the country’s greatest skiing and winter life. Let’s face it, living in Los Angeles, it feels like the year is one long continuum sans seasons. But, I’ll be honest, the amazing snow and ski terrain is not the only reason Aspen is at the top of the list. A ski holiday needs to include all of the accoutrements and for me that means great food and people watching, and a healthy mix thereof. From the alpine chic fashion to the cozy chalet decor, I find it inspiring and a great way to get the creative juices flowing (and I don’t just mean wine!). So, I’ve put together some of my favorite spots and make sure to scroll down for lunch. What’s a day on the slopes without bubbles!

For years, this tiny basement spot has been one of very favorites. It reminds me of skiing in France, Italy and Switzerland where the food is as important as the pistes. Cold weather calls for fondue, crepes and raclette. Over the years, French Alpine Bistro has been my go to for delicious Alpine fare. But that’s not all that brings me here. The decor is rustic charm: think Swiss alpine flee market but lit really well. Yes, it’s cozy, so much so that you get to know your neighbors. Some might call that too small. I call it just the right amount of quirk. I must admit, I nearly cried this year when they told me that they did away with the table-side raclette and chocolate dessert fondue. Were they bought by a private equity firm or something!? I’m still hopeful they’ll change their minds!

Speaking of France, this place is chic AF. It totally gives off St. Tropez vibes with white, white and more white decor and lots of sexy lighting. It’s no wonder that Betula has a sister property in St. Barth’s. In addition to sexy decor, Betula offers amazing music vibes which pick up into the night. I don’t understand why more restaurants don’t do this. It makes for such fun ambiance and a really grown up night out. That said, you pay for it. The prices are even higher than most other restaurants in Aspen and that’s saying a lot! Oh and the food, well, I guess you don’t come here for the food so I’ll leave it at that!

Located right across the road from the St. Regis, this charming spot that feels very Bavarian. Offering all the favorite Alpine delights including fondue and huge pretzels, it’s a super fun treat for the kids too. Almresi has been a staple in Vail so its German owners decided to bring it to Aspen, right before the pandemic. Well, we all know how that goes. Anyway, they’re open now and happily welcoming guests with reservations. They’re small, mighty and get booked up fast! Watch out French Alpine Bistro!

I was debating including this one because it’s such a staple in NY and LA so not unique to Aspen BUT it is really top notch! It was certainly our favorite meal this last trip. You can’t beat great steaks, solid starters and some yummy crudo to cap off a mountain meal. The dining room is moody and rich in tone. This spot is a solid blend of ambiance and good food. If you can get a reservation, and have some cash to spare, go for it!

Known as the apres spot on Ajax mountain, Ajax Tavern always delivers good food and a good time. Go for lunch on a sunny day and sit outside. The people watching can’t be beat. And of course, the beautiful views on the mountains aren’t too bad either. Ajax serves up some great staples including a yummy charcuterie board and a solid burger. Crowds gather after the mountain shuts down for bubbles and music - the perfect formula for a great time!

I promised some on mountain lunch spots so let me start with my favorite. If you are skiing Snowmass, you MUST make a reservation at this most charming and cozy cabin. The interior is everything you would expect in a mountain chalet and on a sunny day, the outdoor terrace takes off! Yes, this place brings all the Alpine charm and it delivers time after time, food quality. Don’t miss the grass-fed burger with bacon jam or house made pâté. Not a spot for a quick lunch so settle in, order some drinks and enjoy! Good thing the way down is some easy greens….

No private equity here. This place is history and still family owned, or so they say. It’s a real staple on Ajax mountain and you don’t even need a reservation. Known for some killer pancakes in the morning, Bonnie’s is a real skiers joint. Simple fare in a simply rustic environment, it’s got what you need for a day on the mountain. Bluejay days are perfect here too. The two tiered terrace provides some of the greatest advantage points. Oh and, you must have the strudel. A local told me the apples are flown in from an orchard across the mountain range. True or urban legend, either way it’s delicious!

No Aspen food wrap up should be complete without mention of this place. I guess you could call it an ice cream shop but alas, it is so much more! First of all, the flavors are dope and here they call them gelato. Each cup or cone comes overstuffed and topped with a cookie, OK?! The baked goods are all superb: muffins, brownies, croissants, the works! If you are staying nearby (I’m so jealous), they open at 6:30am. Pick up some freshly baked goods for breakfast for everyone in your chalet and you’ll definitely be invited back next year!

Please please please, tell me what I’ve missed! I’m always looking for needles in haystacks. Particularly, authentic and good! Oh and decor and design is everything so I’d love to hear what you all think of these spots!
